I also had the CLUTTER_PAINT line in /etc/environment, as a workaround for the issue described in https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id= 720605 . Just removed it, upgraded mutter and gnome-shell and everything seems to work properly now. I also have "CLUTTER_VBLANK=True", but that one doesn't seem to be causing any issues so far. --John.
