Hi Fabian, thanks for taking care. Installed were libharfbuzz0b and libharfbuzz-icu0 in version 1.2.7-1 on my testing/sid amd64 system. As suggested, I downgraded both to version 0.9.35-2 which needed also libicu52 52.1-10 using dpkg. The umlauts (and other disturbances like '>' instead of a fat '.' in an input field) in firefox now looked o.k. Then I upgraded the harfbuzz packages to the latest sid version 1.2.7-1+b1 and still all seems fine. Also going back one version of the harfbuzz packages to 1.2.7-1 and purging libicu52 works now. Therefore, I think something in the original upgrade of fonts-liberation went wrong which got repaired by the down/up-grade of the harfbuzz packages. Regards, jvp.
