Please try before the reboot, enter a shell in debian-installer chroot /target apt-get install build-essentials remove the gcc (gcc 3.3.4) package install gcc-2.95 ln -s /usr/bin/gcc-2.95 /usr/bin/gcc add a deb-src line to /etc/apt/sourcec.list apt-get source silo build the silo package with the "old" compiler dpkg -i the fresh compiled silo finish first stage of d-i, which reboots the computer at the second stage of d-i, which installs the broken silo_1.4.8-1 you have to re-installed the 2.95 compiled silo-1.4.8 and report your milage.
