Just as a follow-up,

I have looked at upstream activity, and it seems that there is an
on-going effort to make rope compatible with Python 3.

I tried to refresh the packaging with 0.10.3 and attempted a build
for Python 3. There are still a lot of tests that do not pass on
Python 3.5, which is acknowledged in the following bug upstream:

  https://github.com/python-rope/rope/issues/171

So, I guess we should monitor how this issue goes before going further
with rope.

I believe spyder still makes it an optional dependency, so it should not
be a blocker.
