On debian unstable, with GNOME 3.18 installed. 0) Install icedove 1) Go to gnome-control-center info (Details in the UI) panel 2) Select icedove as the defaut mail client 3) Start icedove, it complains that it's not the default mail application. 4) Make it default 5) Go back to the gnome-control-center info panel There you will see that you have now 2 Icedove entries for the mail application (one with an icon and a new one without one). If you are selecting the one with the icon and start icedove again, it will complain that again that it's not default. In ~/.config/mimeapps.list I can see the following: [Default Applications] x-scheme-handler/mailto=userapp-Icedove-3UJNEY.desktop message/rfc822=userapp-Icedove-3UJNEY.desktop [...] [Added Associations] x-scheme-handler/mailto=icedove.desktop;userapp-Icedove-3UJNEY.desktop; [...] And indeed, icedove has created a new .desktop file in ~/.local/share/applications/userapp-Icedove-3UJNEY.desktop with the following content: [Desktop Entry] Encoding=UTF-8 Version=1.0 Type=Application NoDisplay=true Exec=/usr/lib/icedove/icedove %u Name=Icedove Comment=Définition personnalisée pour Icedove Is that really needed? Shouldn't icedove detect that it's default if the icedove.desktop file is used?
