This is something that I had talked with Antonio Terceiro in private when we were dealing with another backport. The backport contribution guidelines states that[1] if you do this, it will be easier to follow the packages through DDPO. In the section "Basic rules"[2], there's a mention of no modifications beside the ones related to the backport itself.
