Your problem is most likely caused by using the old version of fastboot that's in Debian with a newer Android version.
We're working on a total overhaul of the Android SDK packaging that updates everything to the latest version, and the android-tools-fastboot package will become obsolete. adb has already been completed, fastboot is coming soon.
