I misunderstood this part initially, I thought there could have been a
problem with extlinux aside from using btrfs. The original patch had
subvolume related changes to the extlinux support but I am not going to
get involved in the extlinux support for btrfs - especially if that
feature is not involved. I wouldn't know where to start and have no
particular interest in btrfs specifically.

If extlinux support is required with btrfs, a separate bug report would
be appropriate. I'll be adding a block on using roottype btrfs with
extlinux with a tweak to the tests with this patch for btrfs support
with grub.
