Last time I tried matroxfb on alpha (IIRC it was with 2.5.68), this patch helped to get it working correctly: ftp://platan.vc.cvut.cz/pub/linux/matrox-latest/ I thought that patch was integrated upstream already, but there's a patch against 2.6.15-rc4, so I don't think it was integrated already.
