I have checked the mate packages, and discovered that a bunch of these were still trailing in a 1.10 version :
ii mate-core 1.10.0+1 all MATE Desktop Environment (essential components, dummy package) ii mate-desktop-environment 1.10.0+1 all MATE Desktop Environment (metapackage) ii mate-desktop-environment-core 1.10.0+1 all MATE Desktop Environment (essential components, metapackage) ii mate-desktop-environment-extra 1.10.0+1 all MATE Desktop Environment (extra components, dummy package) ii mate-desktop-environment-extras 1.10.0+1 all MATE Desktop Environment (extra components, metapackage) ii mate-screensaver 1.10.2-1 amd64 MATE screen saver and locker ii mate-screensaver-common 1.10.2-1 all MATE screen saver and locker (common files) ii mate-session-manager 1.10.2-4 amd64 Session manager of the MATE desktop environment So I have issued a new update/upgrade session, that pulls all remaining packages in 1.12. And this has solved the issue, the missing menus is now back and fully functionnal. I think that more of using a debian testing as an end-user system, which is finally what it as aimed to (for desktop environment as least), the issue is that not all packages are delivered with a consistent version on the same day. There should be a locking mechanism that would prevent functionnaly linked packages being downloadable before all core packages are in a consistent version However, this case can be closed as a non-bug. Thanks for your patience.
