Wow, even Conrad isn't using the ALSA support?  He needs to get with
the program! Those OSS compatibility modules are a crutch!  :-)

More seriously, the main reason I got rid of them is to make it harder
for random crud (like the flash plugin) to open a device and stop me
unloading the sounds modules at suspend time.

I stopped using esound.  I couldn't get rid of distortion on my new
laptop.  :-(

I've briefly tested playback and it seems solid.  I can drag scrubby
around to my heart's content and it seems fine.  Sound quality is
good.  Recording seems to work, although I've only tested it
briefly...
