There's another bug mentioning the very same issue. It seems the OP also has issues setting up PXE/NFS boot with the absolute symlink.
#763348 This bug has also been reported against the Ubuntu kernel package where is has apparently been fixed. Maybe this fix can be applied to the Debian sources as well: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1248053
