But phrasing it the other way around: what is absolutely neccessary to
run things under bumblebee? I.e. if something is not installed, I could
skip installing that second alternative ...

Think about the minimal requirements, e.g. a sid chroot on a stable
host, so no kernel, xorg, ... installed in the chroot, just a minimal
set of libraries and applications to run one specific program ...
Then we can use triggers on something to enable that alternative
alternative automatically.
