I think you're missing the point of what linux32 does.  It will
not allow you to run 32 bit applications you otherwise can't run.
The only thing it does is change the output of uname -m.

The only thing linux32 has as intention to do is to make programs
believe that they're running on an i686 machine while they
actually run on an x86_64 machine, or something simular for ia64
and things like that.

I suggest that you look at the amd64 faq at:

It doesn't say anything about linux32.  But you could then use
something as "linux32 dchroot" if you really need it.  In most
cases you do not need linux32.  It's mostly useful for compiling
programs and things like that.

Yes, you need 32 bit version of the all the libraries that gedit
requires.  Some of this might be in the ia32-libs packages, but
for something as gedit this isn't going to work.  Please see the
