I've just had a closer look at the situation that another user has
His device:
$ gphoto2 --auto-detect

and the lsusb details (below) suggest it is PTP
I notice the lsusb details are slightly different from the other device
I tested, a Samsung Galaxy Note 3, where the protocol string just says
"PTP" or "MTP" while the protocol string in the lsusb output from the
other user's Nokia Lumia says "Picture Transfer Protocol (PIMA 15470)"
To summarize:
My phone (Galaxy Note 3):
- in PTP mode, Shotwell opens automatically
- in MTP mode, no option to launch Shotwell, just "Open with Files"
Other user's phone (Nokia Lumia 920):
- in PTP mode, no option to launch Shotwell, just "Open with Files"
and, as mentioned in the original email, this was working fine for the
user with the Nokia Lumia on wheezy, the problem only started when he
upgraded to jessie, so it may be a regression.
