I don't think it makes sense to replace *all* the other apt tools, but at the moment, the apt tool almost completely supercedes apt-get, with (as far as I can tell) the one exception being the "source" command. In addition, apt has more user-friendly defaults, and those defaults would apply to downloading sources as well. - Josh Triplett
