Package: passwd Version: 1:4.2-3 Severity: normal Tags: patch Dear Maintainer,
Running pwconv when /etc/passwd- does not exist, and when there is no action required by pwconv in /etc/passwd, results in the error "pwconv: failed to change the mode of /etc/passwd- to 0600". This is because the /etc/passwd- backup file will not be created when no action is taken on /etc/passwd and then it tries to chmod the non-existent file. I provided a patch (http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/pkg-shadow- devel/2015-February/010551.html) that was applied upstream (https://github.com /shadow-maint/shadow/commit/17887b216d6d8292870c572ce4be950cc4077f2a). Please could the patch be applied in the Jessie shadow package? The extraneous error appears in the logs during boot up of a Debian Live image: Jul 22 12:05:50 debian pwconv[302]: failed to change the mode of /etc/passwd- to 0600 <snip> Jul 22 12:05:51 debian live-config[238]: live-config: debconf hostname user- setuppwconv: failed to change the mode of /etc/passwd- to 0600 Thanks, Duncan -- System Information: Debian Release: 8.1 APT prefers stable-updates APT policy: (500, 'stable-updates'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Foreign Architectures: i386 Kernel: Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.utf8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.utf8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) Versions of packages passwd depends on: ii debianutils 4.4+b1 ii libaudit1 1:2.4-1+b1 ii libc6 2.19-18 ii libpam-modules 1.1.8-3.1 ii libpam0g 1.1.8-3.1 ii libselinux1 2.3-2 ii libsemanage1 2.3-1+b1 passwd recommends no packages. passwd suggests no packages. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe".
