without further logs we are impossible to give any hints how to avoid such behavior. Please visit the wiki site for Icedove and try to get familiar with various pissibilities to create logs. Especially the section about Debugging Icedove Activity should you read, a other possibility to get information from the internal work of Icedove is the JS console. Press Crtl+Shif+J to open the error console and look there is any issue are reported. Which addons are installed, have you tried to disable soem of them. Some addons are really buggy and give various side effects. Also look inside your profile if the are some duplicated files which may created while the issue was happen, something like *-[1,2,3,...].*. Any entrys inside the prefs.js that are suspious?
