Is this still an issue with your current version of nano?
Because I cannot reproduce this with either 2.2.2 nor
2.4.1 (which are the versions of nano I have available).

If it still does not work correctly for you, please show the
full output of the command 'locale' typed in a terminal.

Do things only work abnormally in an xterm?  Or also in
a Gnome or KDE terminal?

With your workaround, setting LC_ALL to C, can you then
still input and see accented letters?  If so, you could just
alias nano to "LC_ALL=C nano" and be done with it, no?
