@Felix: Actually the pip_util.diff is only relevant for bug #758787. I've tested what will be pip 1.5.6-6 with that patch and it isn't relevant for bug #786440 afaict.
I'm inclined not to fix this for the 1.5.6 series, and just concentrate on getting (now) pip 7 into Debian.
