More information: The problem with Xine occurs only on my laptop with Debian's current 2.6.8-2-686 kernel image.
It does not occur with a 2.4 kernel, and it doesn't occur with a 2.6.12-1-686 image either. Xine works fine with those. The same kernel 2.6.8 also makes problems with my USB sticks whereas the other two work. So this might be a kernel related bug.
