This is #635711 again, apparently because the fix for 635711 was not
properly applied :/ I was never able to replicate #635711 myself, so i
(thought i had) included the patch for it and called for testing.
however, it looks like the patch failed to be applied properly.
I've managed to get a VM that for whatever reason allows me to reliably
reproduce the problem now, so i'm working on testing a fix.
i still don't know why this VM allows me to reproduce it, but previous
VMs did not :(
