Did you verify this with other desktops or window managers to be a bug in mate-session-manager rather than in lightdm? Or did you alternatively test a different display manager like kdm or gdm3? lightdm is well known to be pretty broken when it comes to session and language selection. I have filed multiple bugs on these issues to the upstream bug tracker which still haven't been addressed and I have consequently given up on lightdm. Cheers, Adrian -- .''`.
