I think there could be many ways to impliment your request. I just do not want to make maze nor make complicated transition. I now think your patch maybe OK considering other trade-off. Your patch will cause some confusion if people configure system via GUI im-config command, though. That is why I am not going quick on Debian. Let me have some time for Debian update.
