Thanks! Even the latest Debianised xorg (6.9 RC2) doesn't seem to work, so this alternative is a real life-saver.
Wandering a bit from the original issue, but why is the nvidia driver so tightly tied to the kernel version? As far as I can tell, most of the X drivers don't care what kernel you are using. Is it really necessary to rebuild every time you change kernels? This seems particularly problematic if you are switching between kernels, because at most one could be happy.
