this bug appears to be fixed in GNU Make CVS http://cvs.savannah.gnu.org/viewcvs/make/make/?sortby=date#dirlist
(there seem to be a lot of fixes since this beta, including modifying the problematic second expansion feature to be controlled by a pseudotarget.) -- I usually have a GPG digital signature included as an attachment. See http://www.gnupg.org/ for info about these digital signatures.
