Hi again, I have another piece of (hopefully useful) information:
1) I was apparently not using the "right applications"; I just found out that launching basically any 3D application causes xserver to crash instantly. Easily reproduced e.g. by launching glxgears.
2) Also, I found out that it happens ONLY if I have an external display connected (via HDMI, the laptop has no other reasonable outputs available). The external display is set up by:
