Your packaging updates look good, in particular the debian/copyright overhaul! Regarding the latter, you've listed src/preferences.c twice ;-). Is the dh_builddeb override in debian/rules necessary? Since you're adding a bunch of .install files, it should be possible to install the XPM using them too, thereby simplifying debian/rules even further. debian/watch mentions sane-backends which I guess is a copy-and-paste error!
