I'm fine with that, but i don't know enough about the
desktop-environment world to know the specifics of what the "fix up"
should be.
If you want to suggest a concrete change to the .desktop files and
reassign to xscreensaver-desktop, i'd have no objection.
Here's an example .desktop file (sorry for line-wrap with this MUA) from
xscreensaver-data if you want something to consider without fetching and
installing the package:

Exec=/usr/lib/xscreensaver/ripples -root
TryExec=/usr/lib/xscreensaver/ripples

With the -water option, it manipulates your desktop image to look like
