The buildd network and some of our QA processes uses software (sbuild or something else) that has had this limitation for years, and we've get used to it somehow. I suspect it can't be easily fixed, otherwise it would probably have been done a while ago. I'd be delighted to be proven wrong, though. So, as far as the Jessie release is concerned, I went with the short-term fix.
