What tells:

$ ls -al /var/lib/alsa/asound.state

Does the dir status changed after:

# alsactl store

?

Elimar

# ls -al /var/lib/alsa/asound.state
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 12711 Nov 9 17:35 /var/lib/alsa/asound.state
# alsactl store
# ls -al /var/lib/alsa/asound.state
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 12711 Nov 9 19:47 /var/lib/alsa/asound.state

so the storing seems to work.

Hmm, are your surround settings restored after reboot or just

# service alsa-utils restart

?

Elimar

The problem was that I'd plugged the pc speakers into the "rear speakers output" and KDE was set to do analogue stereo output, so it muted "surround output" and hence the "rear speakers".

With the pc speakers plugged into the front/line output, things worked much better.

Thankfully I still had the documentation for motherboard handy.

Please close the bug report, and sorry for the bother.

Arthur.
