Hunspell is commonly described as a backwards-compatible replacement for myspell. Sometimes, however, it makes sense to preserve both format dictionaries. for german dictionaries I notice that both hunspell and myspell dictionaries are provided, but unlike e.g. Danish they seem developed from same source, yet do not document really why one would want to pick one over the other (only which - obsolete? - projects picked which).
