I think that the approach in fix-princ-name.diff is kind of a hackish workaround and the problem would ideally be solved elsewhere.
The comment about disparity between /tmp/user/ and /tmp/krb5cc_blah seems quite relevant, though. Perhaps the /tmp/krb5cc_blah location is stab()able but not read()able?
