Thanks for the report, I remember running into a very similar issue in the past when we brought in 1.10 on Wheezy with GTK3. I think it had something to do with liferea reading GTK3 theme data from the user's profile and not getting anything valid. Possibly because the user was using GTK3 apps without ever logging into a Gnome desktop. Something about logging into a Gnome desktop was creating profile data that liferea was trying to read. I'll have to dig it up and figure out why it would still be an issue in Sid. Could you please clarify if you're running Gnome as your DE or not?
