I had this same problem, and while digging around for the cause, I found the file /usr/share/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/01_debian.conf. If I try to set any of the options listed in that file in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf, lightdm crashes. Perhaps lightdm cannot handle an option being set twice?
