For the record, just in case it helps anybody else:
commenting out the rule in line 77 of
modsecurity_crs_41_sql_injection_attacks.conf
also "solved" the problem, now Zabbix and Roundcube run.
(But for zabbix i also needed to comment out lines 64-66 of
modsecurity_crs_30_http_policy.conf
to allow for Json rpc's... probably too much but way better than running
without mod_security ;-)
