I'm trying to find out what the real purpose of this file is on the systemd interactions with timedated, since, as for what I can see on my non-gnome-X system, it appears to coexist just fine. The openntpd.service file itself seems to be quite similar to the one we run on Debian, so as you mention, the only missing bit would be the openntpd.list file being dropped on that directory. Are you perceiving any degradation, misbehaviour or issue on your X configuration while using systemd and trying to adjust the date? Is it reproducible?
