I may have misunderstood something but i had a hard time finding out how to enable the layout i choosed in xkeycaps. This was in an Xnest as the current debian one does not support XKB extension i need xmodmap to fix the layout (and it remove any problems related to XKB and xmodmap combination from the possible explanation or this problem). To finally get the correct layout i did this: - select keymap - "Restore Default Map" which enable the keymap - write output so in next session i was able to use the written keymap If i did not type on "Restore Default Map", the "write output" output the current incorrect keymap and not the one i selected in xkeycaps. There is nothing in the README about this. The man page explain "Restore Default Map" by: > Restore Default Map > This command restores the keyboard to its default state. If you > execute this command while displaying a keyboard which is not the > type of keyboard you are really using, your keymap will be in a > nonsensical state. There is no way for xkeycaps to tell what keyâ > board you are using except by taking your word for it, so donât > lie. To me it seems it requires magic to find out how to enable the select keymap. "Restore Default Map" mean disable changes and restore the previous state to me, in xkeycaps its the opposite. Could the button name be changed to something like 'Enable Choosen keymap' and "Write output" to "Write activated keymap" ? It seems to me that bug 284387 is the same problem. It tells that in the program the new keymap special keys worked (| \ ...) but not after using "write output". If the user never typed "Restore Default Map" he generated the us default keymap, his changed where never applied. This is a wishlist , but i setted it as normal bug, cause the current behaviour is not documented. Thus the button names are wishlist only if the documentation could be updated so nobody can mislead with the way to enable the changes. Also it seems Xnest supported XKB so xmodmap was somewhat obsolete but it does not anymore (even with +kb). Please fix the wordings so nobody will loose hours when the program is perfect otherwise.
