Yes, what happens is that gimp-ufraw tries to open the file as a raw
file, and if it fails, then it uses gimp to open it.  It does this
because some cameras save their raw files as tiff.

When you open a tiff file, what happens?  Does it give an error message?

The fix mentioned in the mailing list was just adding ".tiff" and
".jpeg" as extensions to check for failures, and not just ".tif" and
".jpg".
