Package: xfe
Version: 0.72-1
Severity: normal

After upgrading to the new version the new feature that generates + displays
image thumbnails was switched on in the settings. Entering a directory with a
moderate number of image files, mostly png, jpg, with some being big (max.
3.7 mb, JPEG), but most pretty small, xfe took approx. 2 minutes to calculate
the image thumbnails (500 MHz PIII, 512 MB RAM). During that time the
program's GUI did neither enter the directory nor did any upate occur.
After minimizing and reopening the window, it would be empty or contain some
junk. While this is 'not pretty', the load produced by the program also
caused the GUI to more or less hang. I could not even switch to another
desktop. I tried to ALT+F2 to a console to renice the program, but even
that did not help. -- This occured while running xfe in GNOME2.6

After my opinion the feature should

a) not be switched on by default (especially the way it is currently
implemented)

b) be programmed in a non-blocking way. I suggest that 1st the directory is
opened and the contents displayed and only then the images are thumbnailed
and consecutively displayed. The calculation of image thumbnails should not
block program or system functionality in any way. Maybe utilizing an existing
fast library for these image calculations might help.

Kind regards

Andreas
