git(1) sayeth:

        --git-dir=<path>
                Set the path to the repository. This can also be
                controlled by setting the GIT_DIR environment
                variable. It can be an absolute path or relative path
                to current working directory.

That's all true, but it doesn't explain that --work-tree should be set
at the same time if you are using a work tree, that the user might
want to use -C instead, and where to read in more depth about the
deployment use case.
