Compilation is slow even with only this header: \documentclass{article} \usepackage{fontspec}% font selecting commands \usepackage{xunicode}% unicode character macros \usepackage{xltxtra} % a few fixes and extras \usepackage{wasysym}
but commenting out the lines which call fontspec, xunicode and xltxtra makes compilation fast. Commenting out only one or two of them makes no difference. One processor core is used at 100%. Memory usage is stable; running xetex uses only a bit of extra memory (0.6 GiB).
