This is the same problem I previously reported under bug #715314 :

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=715314#35
That bug should not have been closed, because the "fix" is worse than
the problem it was supposed to cure; the program is now much less useful
than the previous version in the archive. It now reports no version
information at all for packages which are not installed, which is
commonly when you might want to know this.

    # apt-show-versions -a gdb # version 0.20
    Not installed
    gdb 7.4.1+dfsg-0.1 stable ftp.us.debian.org
    No stable-updates version
    gdb 7.6.2-1.1+b1 testing ftp.us.debian.org
    gdb 7.6.2-1.1+b1 unstable ftp.us.debian.org
    gdb not installed
    #

    # apt-show-versions -a gdb # version 0.22.3
gdb not installed (available for: amd64)
    #

I suggest that the relevant code sections should be reverted to version
0.20, if no better fix can be found. As is, this package is close to
useless.

This bug is currently rated as "Severity: important". Surely something
should be done about it, as soon as possible?
