I really wonder why there seems no possibility to do the sync over an SSH connection like many other syncing tools do, e.g. rsync, unison, sftp, etc.; usually by calling their counterpart on the otherside and transfering any data over STDIN/STDOUT.

Actually, there is a way to sync over SSH. (Or at least, it should be; I don't use this feature myself). Take a look at the wheezy manpage:

Upstream plans to remove this feature in 2.4.0 though, and as you now noticed, it's been already removed from the manpage. :-(

Why they decided to do that is, unfortunately, beyond my comprehension...
