I am confused.  The only sound from the machine is the beep at 
startup.  That is instigated by the BIOS isn't it?  If that is 
true, is there any specific evidence suggesting contention 
between two softwares?  This might help.

No.  What should be used?  Debian Live?  Knoppix?
