I've just tested and sftp:// works just fine. You can try to run bluefish in a debugger or via strace and check, where it hangs. You might check your local ~/.xsession-errors and your other log files for more information on what goes wrong. Do you see anything useful when you start bluefish from the command line? Can you access remote locations via other applications and via gvfs* commands (like gvfs-info)?
