Exactly the same thing happened for me a few times and also today. I
have nvidia (now from Testing but sometimes from Unstable/Experimental)
and the same sys info the reporter gave. Here I have Gnome, IceWM and
E18 but it makes no difference where I use Synaptic.
Each time I got my system working again just by pressing ctrl+alt+F1,
using "sudo apt-get -f dist-upgrade" and then, rebooting.
The strange thing is that I've never had this problem with my other
Debian Testing installed on another partition but with KDE (and with the
same versions of nvidia).
