I did glance at the code for GnuTLS 3.x before reporting this and thought I saw the chain-verification code was substantially similar to 2.x's, but yes, I can confirm that if I apt-get install libgnutls28-dev and ./configure, the resulting build does work for me. So that works too. If you're confident in GnuTLS 3.x going forward, then that solution is fine with me. (I still think it's odd that upstream clearly intends to link against OpenSSL and has no exception, but whatever.)
Hm, do you know why libgnutls-dev still points at libgnutls26? #731175 has no details other than a vague comment about licensing.
