Aha! Thanks for the hint about VM. I think I pinned down the last
missing bit needed to trigger the bug. Apparently it's only reproducible
if you use fbcon.
I couldn't reproduce the bug on the VM until I loaded the vga16fb
module. (I use nouveaufb myself.)
