My suspicion is that the systemd configuration on your system interferes with
transmission-daemon. I am not completely sure but there are other bug reports
for transmission that describe segfaults with transmission-daemon which are 
caused
by an erroneous service file.

What is the output of

systemctl status transmission-daemon.service

Do you see any improvements if you remove the service file?

Your bug report might also be related to

https://bugs.debian.org/666514

which looks very similar. It seems to me that the non-existent home directory 
for
the transmission-daemon user, debian-transmission, might be the cause for all
the trouble and thus a null pointer leads to a segfault and crash.
